Using AI to Design
One day workshop held on 13th September, 2025 at IDC School of Design, IIT Bomaby
Conducted by Pramod Khambete, Venkatesh Rajamanickam, & Rahul Kulkarni
Objective
- Familiarise participants with key concepts of GenAI (e.g. how it works, what it is good at, what are the limitations, how to use the tools, how not to use the tools, etc.).
- Sharing explorations and experience of using GenAI tools in various ways (e.g. research, ideation, learning, data analysis, etc.).
- Work on 2 familiar activities that we do (P2 level project and a DRS quality research paper) supercharged with AI to understand the outcomes.
Schedule
- Introductory knowledge sharing talks, discussion (2 Hrs).
- For MDes/BDes students: Hands on work on an end to end, full life cycle design project in a timeboxed manner. Expected output: Equivalent to a P2 level project. They may also utilise the data they have collected in any course, and build on that (4-5 hours).
- For Research Scholars: Hands on work on a targeted research topic. Expected Output: A draft of a potentially publishable research / review paper. They may utilise any existing data they have collected (4-5 Hrs).
- You will work in groups of 3 students each. Each group will present in the end (2 Hr).
Prerequisite
- The students will be expected to be familiar with commonly used GenAI platforms and tools (e.g. Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, NotebookLM, etc. Each in various modalities like Deep Research, Image generation and Analysis, Study modes, etc., using the base models as well as Pro models). Even if you haven't used all of them yet, there is enough time to try them out before the workshop. All of us have access to Gemini Pro and Perplexity Pro.
- Some resources (reading, viewing material) will be shared which you will need to go through before the workshop as preparatory work.
